Omnicomic: Top Cow Unveils San Diego Exclusives

What would a Comic-Con be without convention exclusives? Top Cow will have at least five of said exclusives at the show and most of them are of the wraparound variety.

First at the show will be the Artifacts #1 Wraparound San Diego Comic-Con Variant by Michael Broussard and Sunny Gho for $10. It features the writing of Ron Marz and interior art by Broussard alongside Rick Basaldua and Sal Regla on illustrations. In it, thirteen mystical Artifacts, including the Witchblade, the Darkness and others guide the fate of the Top Cow Universe. The issue starts the tale of their uniting to potentially bring Armageddon into the world.

Nfamous Gamers Reviews Cyberforce/Hunter-Killer #5

Two of Top Cow’s greatest super teams continue to go after the allegiance of CyberData and Morningstar to stop them from unleashing a new technological nano-virus from creating genetic mutants all over the world. With the horrifying plan now being enacted, what will the teams do to stop the virus from spreading and who will make the sacrifice necessary to ensure victory for the good guys?

Concluding the action packed series, the survivors of both teams face off against an empowered Morningstar as they struggle to save humanity from the terrifying effects of the virus. But when one former teammate goes traitor, the shit hits the fan fast. Ellis loses control of his powers as Damper turns off the control he had on him and Velocity is infected with the virus as well. Ballistic is forced to take down her sister, Ellis goes after Morningstar despite his condition, and Network and Damper pay the price for their roles in the entire matter. In the end, none of the teams is left unscathed and a couple switch sides afterwards.

Mark Waid delivers another pulse pounding action story. Again, not as deeply thought out as some of his better materials, but still worth a pick up if you want some action this week. Fast paced and full of punch, it is a fitting end to the mini-series.

Comic Attack Reviews Cyberforce/Hunter-Killer #5

“CF/HK pt 5″: Well I pretty much called it in my review of Cyberforce/Hunter-Killer #4, and it feels so good to be right. There was no way this was going to end well for the two teams, but they did give a valiant effort and sacrificed a lot to accomplish the bit of good that came out of this story. Which is actually quite a testament to them considering that they received beat down after devastating beat down.

In my review of the first issue I made a comment regarding Filip Sablik’s promise that this would not be your average team-up book. And to make good on my promise I’m tuning up my vocal chords as I type this! After going back and reading the series as a whole, it stands out as one of the better team-up books to come out in a long time. Which was my thought before seeing ComicAttack.net quoted on the cover of this issue!

Geeks of Doom Reviews Cyberforce/Hunter-Killer #5

Geeks of Doom's The Insomniac was never much of a fan of CyberForce during the late nineties. He found that most of the comics put out in that era looked the same and the characters tended to run together. So naturally he was surprised to read CyberForce: Hunter-Killer #5 and found it so much fun.

It was nice to see some fascinating character development in comic books that were known in the nineties for nothing more then extreme violence. Writer Mark Waid has set up a very fascinating integration between the two teams, creating new tensions and a new dynamic between the members, especially Velocity and Ellis. While the writing was a big step up from the early days, it was the art that was particularly brilliant. Kenneth Rocafort’s gritty style and the dull colouring made the monster designs horrifying. I would love to see Rocafort do some straight up and down horror comics. His creature designs are like something out of Lovecraft.

RATING: 3.5 out of 5 Mutations

Don't call it a come back. It's another installment of "I Thought You'd Never Ask." Another week, another 5 questions with one of Filip Sablik's comic creator pals, questions which your average reporter would never think to ask. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll say "thanks for the distraction from work."

My victim this week is none other than Mark Waid. If you read comics, you know Mark Waid. He's edited or written virtually every character and series for DC Comics and Marvel Comics. You can check out his ComicBookDB profile to get a full sense of the scope of his work, but I'll just mention a few of my personal favorite things Mark has written - Kingdom Come, Flash, Captain America, Fantastic Four, Empire, Irredeemable, Hunter-Killer, and Cyberforce/Hunter-Killer.

Filip Sablik: It's no secret that you are a huge Superman fan and that Richard Donner's Superman movie played a big role in inspiring you to pursue comics as a career. Are you a bigger fan of the original cut of Superman 2 or the Donner cut?

Mark Waid: I'm torn. I think that the Donner cut was a better story, but the Lester cut was a better movie. If I have to choose, though, I favor the Donner cut because there's no stupid slapstick happening while the villains are destroying Metropolis

Cosmic Book News Reviews Witchblade #134. Out in Stores Today!

In issue #134, Det. Sara Pezzini, the bearer of the Witchblade gauntlet, is on the hunt for a green-haired cyborg assassin (she looks like a cross between something from "Jem and the Holograms" and the movie "Robocop"). While she is hunting the assassin, called Aphrodite IV, she runs across Argent, from Top Cow's "Hunter Killer" series, and there are even touches of the recent Cyber Force Hunter Killer mini-series, not to mention plot points from the Angelus series.

Simply, if you are not getting either Witchblade or Angelus, you are missing out on some amazing stories!

They are more than worth the cover price.

Comic Attack Reviews Cyberforce/Hunter Killer #4

Comic Attack took some time out to review Cyberforce/Hunter-Killer #4 by Mark Waid and Kenneth Rocafort.

Here is an excerpt of what they had to say:

Now four issues deep and Mark Waid has not let up on the ass whoopin’ these teams are taking. The physical and psychological damage here is so great that even if the good guys do win it will be a Pyrrhic victory at best. And you know what? That’s okay, especially when all too often the heroes come out of these team up books all hugs and smiles planning softball games and BBQs. Waid promised in the beginning that this story wouldn’t be your usual team up book, and so far he is delivering. Speaking of delivering, Rocafort does a good enough job with this issue, though I feel the earlier ones were much better visually. He still brings an artistic punch to the title that keeps you interested, and that dynamic panel layout helps move the story. There is a brief but brutal fight scene with Ripclaw, followed by a shot of him after the fight with the two giants that is just awesome!
