Salt Lake City Weekly Interviews Tyler Kirkham

Going back into the world of comics today, we focus our attention on the works of an artist who practiced his craft and got into drawing issues the hard way. But man, did it pay off.

Tyler Kirkham has been producing all kinds of work for Top Cow for the past few years, having a hand in titles from Image such as Strykeforce, Broken Trinity and The Tenth. Now producing workds primarly for Marvel such as Fusion and Ultimate Fantastic Four, his dedication has earned himself a following and opened up new doors for projects yet to be seen. I got a chance to chat with Tyler about his work and time at Top Cow, as well as projects coming down the road and his thoughts on comics in general.

Gavin: Hey Tyler! First off, tell us a little bit about yourself.

Tyler: Well I was born and raised in Davis county Utah. I've been married for almost seven years to my high school sweet heart Jill. I've always been huge into art. I've always loved drawing. I also love playing video game and Basketball.

Gavin: How did the opportunity come about to work at Image Comics?

Tyler: I got really lucky I think. I started going to more conventions and really trying to pursue comics. I had a really cool art teacher in high school. He let us do what we wanted. So and few friends and I worked on our own comics. So what happened is I had a friend on a church mission is California. He was living in a house with another guy that also liked art and comics. I would send my friend my art and he would show people. The other guy that lived in the house said, "I know where a comic studio is that's real close." He took my art to the Top Cow offices. He showed one of the editors there. She saw promise in my art, but I still wasn't ready. Now I had an in though. I would always do new work and show this editor, or if I went to a convention I would talk to her. So what happened is she was working with a the writer of The Gift. He was looking for a young artist. I wasn't ready to work at Top Cow yet, but this was something good for me to wet my feet and grow as an artist.

Comic Addiction reviews Fusion #3

Well, we’ve found ourselves at the end of what can only be described as a very fun romp through a melded universe where Marvel and Top Cow characters continue to know one another and fight alongside one another for insane reasons.

I reviewed the second issue of this miniseries on an episode of the podcast and said something along the lines that this miniseries sounds ridiculous when its described to you, but once you read the story it all clicks and you understand that you can’t take it too seriously. When you do that you realize that this is just a fun story that is meant to be read for the enjoyment of its insanity.

This is how crossovers should be done. Who doesn't enjoy when characters from different publishers meet up? Top Cow knows how to handle these events. They manage to make the comic feel as if it exists in a single comic universe. You also get douchey Iron Man getting some claw action courtesy of Ripclaw .

Comic Book Jesus reviews Fusion #1

It’s been a while since the comics biz had had a good x-over. In the 90s we couldn’t get enough of them. Batman teamed up with everyone. Spider-Man teamed up with everyone. Punisher and Archie teamed up with each other.

Now the concept is back. In grand fashion. Two teams from Marvel and two teams from Top Cow in the same book is a great way to start. Of course, Top Cow artists have been doing cover and interior work for the House of Ideas recently, so this is no big stretch. Fusion debuts spectacularly, with plenty of cool costumes and powers to please any fan of superheroes. This issue primarily focuses on the Mighty Avengers and Ripclaw, but with two more issues to come, the balance should be restored.

Filip Sablik Signing This Wednesday, Promotes Fusion #1, Checks Out Your Doodles

The Top Cow Productions/Marvel Comics crossover comic Fusion arrives this week, and Top Cow publisher Filip Sablik is going to promote the event by signing copies at Collector’s Paradise in Winnetka, CA.

The publisher is teaming with the popular Los Angeles area retailer to hand sell copies of the three issue limited series directly to fans. Beginning at 11am on Wednesday, May 13th, Sablik will act as a regular sales associate, ringing up customers, making recommendations, and following store owner Edward Greenberg’s every order. Comic Addiction reviews Fusion #1

Top Cow and Marvel have had a very successful run of company crossovers through the years. I think they've all been pretty fun, well drawn, and overall worth the experience. I think it all started with "Devil's Reign" back in 1997 which saw Marvel's Mephisto going to the Top Cow Universe to steal souls so he could become more powerful and rule over the Marvel Universe. While the premise sounds a little weak, the crossover was fun. This new crossover event is a 3-issue miniseries called Fusion where we get to see the Avengers and Thunderbolts from the Marvel Universe and Cyberforce and Hunter-Killer teams from the Top Cow Universe come together for a reason that has not been made clear by the end of this first issue.

Early Review/Preview Fusion

You have to love a good crossover. We don't see a lot of inter-company crossover these days. It seems that some publishers are too competitive to simply don't get along. Not so with Top Cow. Top Cow is about to release it's massive crossover with Marvel featuring Cyberforce, Hunter-Killer, the Mighty Avengers (pre-Secret Invasion) and the Thunderbolts.

The key to a good crossover is the set up. There has to be a good reason for the different characters to meet and/or fight each other. The nice thing about this is it's not crammed into one issue (like some past Top Cow/Marvel crossovers). Things are set up here. We get a taste of what is to come. And it tastes pretty good. We have a great creative team handling this. Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning are doing the writing with Tyler Kirkham doing the art. It looks good and we get a credible situation to bring the teams together.
