Scheduled to be in stores June 30, 2010, The Darkness: Origins Volume 2 continues the rebranding presented as part of the publisher’s “Origins” trade paperback line reprinting of classic Top Cow Universe stories that includes the recently released Witchblade: Origins Volume 1 and 2, and The Darkness: Origins Volume 1 trade paperbacks.

CBR: "Witchblade" Walks The Road To "Artifacts"

Homicide detective Sara Pezzini is one of New York City's finest police officers, but she has much more than a service revolver at her disposal - she's the bearer of the Witchblade, one of thirteen highly coveted Artifacts in the Top Cow Universe.

Created by Marc Silvestri, David Wohl, Brian Haberlin and Michael Turner, Sara is virtually synonymous with Top Cow thanks to her long-standing ongoing series, "Witchblade," currently written by Ron Marz. Soon, Sara will assume a central role in another series - "Artifacts," the 13-issue event penned by Marz and drawn by a team of artists including Michael Broussard. CBR News spoke with Marz and Top Cow Publisher Filip Sablik to learn more about Sara's role in "Artifacts."

As an Artifact, the Witchblade represents the balance between the Darkness and the Angelus, the primal forces of dark and light within the Top Cow Universe. Thankfully, this burden falls into the hands of Sara, a character that Sablik described as the "purest hero in the Top Cow Universe, in the sense that she's always trying to do what's right in her mind."

Parka Reviews The Art of Top Cow

The Art of Top Cow's 320-page volume collects some of the best work from Top Cow. There's art from Witchblade, The Darkness, Cyberforce, Aphrodite, The Magdalena, Hunter-Killer, Universe, Weapon Zero and other smaller titles.

If you read Top Cow comics, you should know of the quality of art. The illustrations are reproduced brilliantly in high resolution showing all sorts of detail down to the minute brush strokes. There's no commentary but every illustration is credited. Some of them also come with the pencil sketches and layout before the inking stage.

The impressive lineup of artists whose work are featured, just to name a few, are Marc Silvestri (who drew the cover), Michael Turner, David Finch, Frank Cho, John Cassaday, Greg Horn, Jim Lee and many more. The work from them are really top notch — the colouring, line art, design, etc.

Marc Silvestri Discusses Witchblade with Newsarama

If there's one comic book property that has been most associated with Top Cow publishing since its origins, that comic is Witchblade.

Based on the wielder of an ancient weapon with supernatural beginnings, Witchblade was launched by Image founder Marc Silvestri in 1995, with writers Brian Haberlin and Christina Z and artist Michael Turner. Since then, the character has gone through a lot of changes and the comic has seen several spin-off titles and crossovers. There was a TV show several years ago, and an upcoming feature film is expected next year from producer Michael Rymer of Battlestar Galactica fame.

In the first part of a series looking at the Witchblade and Angelus characters at Top Cow, we talked to Marc Silvestri about how Sara and the Witchblade character has evolved over the years, and what comes next as we head into 2010.

Newsarama: Marc, just to start out, why all the attention on Witchblade recently? Are there big plans coming for the character?

Marc Silvestri: We've been talking internally about where we want to go with her, which you're not getting out of me, by the way. [laughs] We have some really cool ideas for Sara and the whole Witchblade mythology. We're planning some big event stuff for next year.

Marc Silvestri's Original Art, Benefit American Cancer Society

At the Top Cow art exhibit, now showing at Brave New World Comics in Santa Clarita, California, an original Marc Silvestri piece of Witchblade is on sale for $2,900.
