Comics Bulletin Reviews Angelus #3
There is quite a bit of history in the Top Cow universe and Ron Marz seems hell bent on digging up long dormant characters and ideas. This is all meant to prep readers for the upcoming event, “Artifacts.” While Marz succeeds at introducing the near forgotten players, he glosses over any further information which might be jarring for new readers.
Beyond that, I found this issue a lot better than the last one. This is probably in no small part due to the appearance of Jackie Estacado. Being the host for the Darkness, this makes him a natural enemy of the Angelus. Never mind that he and Dani had fought side by side before, here he takes a very aggressive approach to the situation--get them before they get you.
What ensues is a spectacular fight scene. Sejic truly has a gift for portraying the Darkness in all its nightmarish glory. Burning red eyes, reaching black tentacles and rows of teeth go a long way in solidifying the Darkness’ nature as a void of vicious chaos. It also acts as a nice parallel to the Angelus’ gilded order of the last issue.
