OC Weekly: Over the Weekend: Long Beach Comic Expo

Four-and-a-half months after the inaugural Long Beach Comic Con, the organizers of the event (check out our interview here) saw fit to whet comic book fan appetites with the one-day Long Beach Comic Expo this past Saturday at the Long Beach Convention Center. It was one-third as long (the proper LBCC, returning the last weekend of October, is three days long) and about one-third the size, but at least three-fifths of the fun.

Though small, the Long Beach Comic Expo had lots of the usual stuff you'd come to expect at comic conventions--lots of comics, toys and assorted other bizarre ephemera for sale--but none of the stuff that comic conventions have come to attract recently, like relentless plugging of movies, TV shows and video games. The focus was on comic book themselves, fitting in nicely with the Long Beach Comic Con's motto of "love comics more."

Though Marvel and DC didn't have an official presence at the Expo--both held panels at last year's LBCC--Top Cow, a popular branch of Image Comics responsible for Wanted, Witchblade and others, was representing with a booth.

ComicVine Interviews Matt Hawkins at LBCC 09

It seems that Hollywood is looking to the comic book industry to get their "next big hit," and vice-versa with all the news that we have been hearing about upcoming comic book movie adaptations. If you have ever wondered how comic books become movies, then Matt Hawkins, the President of Top Cow, is your go-to guy. I had the opportunity to meet and talk to Matt about the current film projects that Top Cow has in the works, his personal favorite books, and what sorts of goals he has for the future of the independent publishing company.

Superheroes clobber Long Beach Comic Con

Unlike major conventions like San Diego Comic-Con where geek community celebs are often only at panels and then quickly whisked away, Long Beach’s first con was small, yet intimate and very surreal.

In an interview with the Daily Titan, Seth Green said about the convention, “I thought it was good. It’s small, so the floor is manageable. There wasn’t a lot of action figures for sale beyond, like, ‘Star Wars,’ so … a little variety wouldn’t hurt.”

Green and Hugh Sterbakov co-created the comic book “Freshmen” which Sterbakov said is the “awesomest comic ever.”

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Top Cow

Good morning, Top Cow Herd,

Deep breath. Here goes. My name is Christine, and I'm a total comic newb. But also, Top Cow's new marketing assistant.

I'm here to invite you to be my sponsor, I mean guide, on my adventures towards greener pastures, or as I'd like to think the path to geekstreet cred. But more importantly, you'll be here to witness my intense love affair with Top Cow. So if you're not busy, please come by and say howdy-ho this weekend at Long Beach Comic Con (Booth #365).

But before we have our first date, I should disclose some things about me. I like long walks on the beach, bubble baths, almond milkshakes (two straws, not one).. Kidding. Here are the facts: Felicia Day is my homegirl. I'm pretty sure life would totally be rad if it was a 70s sitcom like Three's Company. Watchmen (read: Archie Comics) was my first foray into the world of comics. And, Gabe and Tycho makes me go weak in the knees.

(Cue Match.com promo music.) I promise to share with you my thoughts, my discoveries, my confusion, my questions about the Top Cow universe. And I hope we can keep this a two-way street.

So call me, beep me, when you wanna reach me. Or you can send me love notes (or hate notes, if you swing that way), board messages, tweets, smoke signals, carrier pigeons, etc. And I'll be here to get right back to you.

Until next time,

Christine

P.S. I'll be better at not diablocody-izing and dropping too many references (read: you're so lime green jell-o. kidding! stopping now.) on the next go-around.

Major Spoilers Reveals Top Cow's LBCC Convention Plans

With the Long Beach Comic-Con kicks off this weekend (October 2, 2009) Top Cow will be on hand with creators and limited edition convention exclusives.

Among the artists appearing at the Top Cow booth (#365) will be pencillers Michael Broussard (The Darkness, Unholy Union), Eric Basaldua (Witchblade Annual, Hunter-Killer), Sheldon Mitchell (Trinity: Blood on the Sands, Witchblade Annual), and Nelson Blake II (Pilot Season: Murderer, The Darkness) from the world renowned Top Cow ‘Pit.’ Top Cow inkers Ryan Winn (The Darkness) and Rick Basaldua (Witchblade Annual) will also appear for signings.

Long Beach Comic Con releases preliminary Programming Schedule

Hey Gang! If your in California October 2-4, 2009, and your a hardcore geek, then you have to make your way over to the first annual Long Beach Comic Con! Being it’s first year it probably wont be that crazy, it’s definitely not as big as San Diego Comic Con, which is cool, because it will be a smaller more intimate atmosphere.
