Marc Silvestri Is the Guest of Honor at Wizard World LA

WIZARD: What makes Wizard World different from other conventions?
SILVESTRI: Wizard World seems to be able to key in on the community aspect of comics better than most. They really promote the idea that pros and fans belong to one big clubhouse where no one is excluded. Wizard wants to make sure everyone has a great experience and it shows. I think both the fans and pros benefit from the Wizard staff wanting to make sure everyone who loves comics feels like they are getting the red carpet treatment. People seem to smile a lot at a Wizard-run show. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE.

TOP COW AND VIRGIN ANNOUNCE CROSSOVER EVENT

Witchblade and Devi Join Forces in First Pairing for Companies
Top Cow Productions Inc. and Virgin Comics announced today the first-ever crossover comic book event between the two companies, starring the top, solo female characters from both publishers. In the story, longtime Top Cow icon Witchblade, a mystical artifact currently wielded by New York City detective Sara Pezzini, travels to India and encounters Devi, a supernatural force created by the gods that has been reborn inside the body of a young woman named Tara Mehta.
“The crossover seemed like a perfect connection,” said Top Cow Publisher Filip Sablik. “It was a natural fit to have the Witchblade and Devi meet each other. And to have writer Ron Marz at the helm for us was by far the logical choice.”
Marz is the current writer on Witchblade, having joined the title with issue #80. He has committed to writing the book until at least issue #150 with artist Stjepan Sejic. Marz is also the editor of three of Virgin Comics’ Shakti line of books, including Devi, Ramayan 3392 A.D. and The Sadhu. He joined the staff one year ago to mentor and nurture the company’s young staff of India-based creators.
“Because of my connection to both universes, this crossover was pretty much my baby to run with,” said Marz. “I came up with a concept that would have the two characters believably meet, and from there we fleshed it out to create out a dynamic tale led by two beautiful women and featuring some scary bad guys and a cool pay-off to boot. Plus, this may not necessarily be the only time Sara and Tara meet!”
Top Cow will publish part one of the story in April, called Witchblade/Devi #1. Joining Marz on the issue will be artist Eric Basaldua (Magdalena), who will also draw one of the covers. Virgin Comics will then follow up with part two in May, entitled Devi/Witchblade #1. On that issue, Samit Basu (Devi) writes the story, and Mukesh Singh (Gamekeeper) will provide art and one of the covers. The celebrated Greg Land (X-Men: Phoenix – Endsong) provides variant covers for both issues.
“Simply put, this was a no-brainer for us to do,” said Gotham Chopra, Chief Creative Officer and Editor-in-Chief of Virgin Comics. “Not only are we at Virgin huge fans of Witchblade, but the whole team behind it at Top Cow. I know our guys—Samit Basu and Mukesh Singh—are both going to bring their A game to make sure that Devi holds her own against Sara.”

Madame Mirage #5 Reviews

What started out looking as if it were going to be just another cheesecake female superhero comic has completely surprised me as something uniquely clever. Yes, Madame Mirage is stunningly beautiful with incredible physical assets that literally spill right out of the top of her skin-tight dress—not that I noticed! Yet as we’ve learned through the first three issues, the name Mirage isn’t just a cut handle but an accurate description. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE.

Richard: How did you feel when you first found out you had this new position?

Mel: I was thrilled, for several reasons. One, because I was going to be able to stay in the comic book industry. And three, because I was going to move to Los Angeles, where Top Cow is based, after having lived all my life in New York City. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE.

Review of Witchblade Anime Vol 3 and 4

Witchblade may advertise itself as a show about a hot, semi-naked chick who regularly kicks ass every which way. In fact, though, it's at its best when dealing with the human elements, especially the aforementioned Masane and her relationship with her daughter, Rihoko. But the butt-kicking-hot-chick–seeking audience must be placated as well. The third volume of Witchblade is a bit lighter on fights than one might want, and even the drama goes on a bit of a holiday, but in the fourth volume the series returns to form. There are few writers that can say they have had such a lasting impact on comic books that when you say a character’s name, everyone seems to know that character. TOP COW AND MYSPACE COMIC BOOKS ANNOUNCE

Velocity and Cyblade are the People’s Choice!

LOS ANGELES, Calif., February 19, 2008 - Top Cow Productions Inc. and MySpace, the world’s most popular social network, today announced the winners of Pilot Season, an exclusive contest that encouraged established comic book writers to create a pilot for a potential series using characters that are already well known by comic book fans. Five pilots were submitted and the MySpace Comic Book community was asked to “Take Control” and vote online at
http://myspace.com/pilotseason to determine which two characters would receive their own series in 2008.
The two winning titles for 2007 were announced as Velocity and Cyblade, two of the dynamic female characters from Marc Silvestri’s original creator-owned property Cyberforce. Both series are slated to debut in the fall of 2008 in time for the Cyberforce 17th anniversary.
Velocity will be written by original Pilot Season writer Joe Casey (The Last Defenders,Youngblood) and an artist to be named later. “I couldn’t believe the voting topped four million votes,” marveled Casey. “Better than a New Hampshire primary! If only that many folks would buy the comics...! In any case, the Pilot issue was only the beginning of what we’re going to make sure is a wild ride when the new series hits in the fall.”
Cyblade will see the return of the Pilot Season team of Joshua Hale Fialkov (Marvel Comics Presents, Punks The Comic Book) and Rick Mays (Kabuki, Gen 13). “I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who voted for the book, and I’m positive they won’t be disappointed with where the series goes,” said Fialkov. “It’s going to be balls-to-the-wall explodo, and I’m psyched to be along for the ride.”
“Congratulations to Joe, Joshua, and Rick, as well as Kevin Maguire, who all helped shoot Cyblade and Velocity to the top,” said Top Cow Publisher Filip Sablik. “The fans got out there and made damn sure their voices were heard loud and clear. The guys have a ton of great ideas they’re waiting to unleash on the comics community and if you sign up as a friend on the Pilot Season page you’ll be privy to exclusive sneak peeks.”
The Pilot Season profile received more than 4 million total votes in one month and fans who purchased all five pilot issues were rewarded with a secret voting code printed in each booklet, which doubled the value of their votes. The voting portion of the event was held in conjunction between Top Cow Productions, Inc. and MySpace Comic Books, http://myspace.com/comicbooks.
For more information visit the official Pilot Season MySpace profile at http://myspace.com/pilotseason.

REFLECTIONS RON MARZ, PART I

Since coming on as the scribe of “Witchblade” almost four years ago, Ron Marz hasn’t exactly been satisfied with maintaining the status quo of bearer Sara Pezzini’s life. In fact, it’s safe to say the writer has been doing everything but. In recent storylines, he’s killed off Sara’s longtime love interest, told the origin of the Witchblade (which had not been revealed for ten years), changed Sara’s job, introduced a new love interest, introduce a second Witchblade bearer, and, oh yeah, Marz had Sara and The Darkness conceive a child together CLICK HERE TO READ MORE.

Witchblade #115 Graham Crackers Pick of the Week

Our Pals at Graham Crackers, Illinois' biggest and best comic chain, picked Witchblade #115 as their "Pick of the Week" last week. Check out what they had to say below -

Witchblade #115 - Is this weekly now? Hmm. Anyway, it’s still weird to me that not only do I read Witchblade now, not only do I enjoy Witchblade now, I actually LOOK FORWARD to Witchblade. Weird, like I said. What’s weirder is that perennial whipping-boy for everything crass and cheesecake-y about modern comics, Witchblade has developed into a pretty cool little slice-of-life book, with Sara juggling the demands of being a new mother and a cop (and occasional supernatural champion), while Dani tries to juggle a dance career with dating (and occasional supernatural championing). This issue is actually a great jumping on point, with very little cheesecake (there is some, but it’s more-or-less tasteful) and a lot of drama and comedy, as we get to see a day in the life of both leads. Plus, a super-cute baby! In Witchblade. I know, right?

Top Cow Launches Witchblade Mini-Site!

Witchblade Volume 1 In Stores This Week For Just $4.99!

Top Cow Productions announced today the launch of a brand new mini-site highlighting their flagship title, Witchblade. Additionally, the publisher confirmed that the introductory priced Witchblade Volume 1 trade paperback would be available in stores this Wednesday, February 13th.

The mini-site is part of Top Cow’s ongoing effort to provide new and existing fans alike with a one-stop location on the internet to get information on their favorite Top Cow properties. Fans can direct their browsers to www.topcow.com/witchblade to explore the new website. The site features information about the Witchblade title, the principal characters in the series, preview key issues, and more. “We have a ton of exciting things happening in the world of Witchblade this year and we wanted to make sure fans get up to speed on the series,” explained Top Cow Publisher, Filip Sablik.

Kicking off the publisher’s trade paperback re-branding initiative for Witchblade is the release of the Witchblade Volume 1 trade paperback on Wednesday, February 13th. The collection contains the initial storyline by current series writer, Ron Marz (First Born, Samurai: Heaven & Earth), entitled “Witch Hunt.” The six-issue story is an ideal jumping-on point for readers interested in discovering the modern Witchblade series. Drawn by Mike Choi (X-Men, X-23: Target X) and featuring an iconic painted cover by Stjepan Sejic (First Born, Angelus), the edition is an artistic tour-de-force. However, the thing sure to catch the attention of potential fans is the volume’s aggressive introductory pricing, available exclusively in comic shops for only $4.99. The book market version will carry the regular $9.99 SRP on the cover. Volume 2 will follow in stores on February 27th with Volume 3 planned for release on March 12th.

“I could go on about ‘Witch Hunt’ being a ground-floor read meant to introduce Witchblade to a new audience, or about Mike Choi’s phenomenal artwork, but really, all you need to know is six issues for five bucks. Come on, the only thing more awesome than that is the Giants winning the Super Bowl,” said writer Ron Marz.

Retailers are excited about the new trade paperback’s release as well:

“The pricing for this trade paperback is incredible. Preorder sales were great and we expect sales will continue to be very high at release.” - Cameron Merkler, Discount Comic Book Service.

“A trade paperback collection that’s significantly less than the price of the six issues it collects if you bought them individually? Insanity! Or is it? I think this shows how excited the folks at Top Cow are about this Witchblade material and how committed they are to getting it in reader’s hands. Bravo!” – Roger Ash, Westfield Comics

"Witchblade has become a don't miss book, and now with it being collected in trade and being priced affordably, no one has an excuse to not pick it up and find out what all the buzz is about." - Gary Dills, Phoenix Comics & Toys

Praise for Ron Marz’s Witchblade tenure:

“Marz has cut away the fat without destroying the history.” Grade A – Paperback Reader

“The Witchblade-verse is at its most newbie-friendly point in years.” 4 Out of 5 – Silver Bullet Comics

“Don’t be intimidated by this series having over 100 issues so far. Now is as good a time as any to get on board.” Grade A – Judgement Day, Comic World News

“There is no greater accomplishment for a writer than leaving a reader wanting more, and I want more. Witchblade is highly recommended.” – Suspended Animation

“Witchblade is a damn fine read” – Earth-2.net
