The Beat Covers ComicsPRO 2010

The annual ComicsPRO meeting is going on down in Memphis with retail issues being discussed and several publisher presentations, and retailer/reporter Matt Price has been reporting his heart out from the show. ComicsPRO is an organization for some of the more forward looking comics retailers in the country, and the meeting is a chance for publishers to make presentations and new ideas to get a thorough kicking around. Among the news bites:

• Keynote speaker Robert Kirkman talked about the digital wave

Kirkman said even though his titles “Invincible” and “The Walking Dead” are available online via the comiXology comics iPhone app, sales of the printed editions have not changed. In fact, he said, printed comics sales have increased. “We have this dedicated fan base,” Kirkman said, who will continue to seek out the print product. Digital comics, Kirkman said, will be best used to seek out the next generation of readers.

• President Joe Field offered his take on things

• Top Cow’s 2010 plans

• Oct. 2 will be the next 24 Hour Comics Day

• Astro City is going monthly

• Undoubtedly, the story that will get the most play, however, is a speech by newly-installed DC co-publishers Dan DiDio and Jim lee which announces their plan for DC to be #1 in the direct market

Newsarama: Filip Sablik in "Information Overload?"

We live in an age where unparalleled information is at our fingertips. Not only things like the news or reference material, but information about our friends and even people we don’t actually know.

How many of us start our workday by checking our favorite news or pop culture sites like Newsarama or skimming our RSS feeds in our favorite browsers? Or find ourselves checking up on our Facebook friends’ statuses on our iPhones while standing in line for a cup of coffee? Or checking-in at an exciting new restaurant and tweeting what we’re having for dinner? Okay, maybe that last one is just me.

I admit I’m an information junkie. Part of it is job-related; I need to keep up with the latest in comic news and industry happenings. Another aspect is just part of my ever growing need for feeling connected and informed. I check Twitter after my morning run and sometimes beforehand. I run through a dozen or so RSS feeds with my cup of coffee. I update my status while watching TV in the evening. Yep, I have a problem.

Nerdage: Top Cow at ComicsPRO: Ambitious Scope for Artifacts

Artifacts, kicking off on Free Comic Book Day, will bring together the 13 mystical artifacts that guide the fate of mankind in the Top Cow Universe.

And when those are brought together, “something really, really bad happens,” said Top Cow’s publisher Filip Sablik.

The 13-issue series written by Ron Marz “is by far the most ambitious thing I’ve ever attempted on the publishing end,” Sablik said.

It will reveal how various pieces of the Top Cow universe fit together, and should be appealing to Top Cow’s long-term fans, Sablik said. But the company also is making it new-reader friendly, with a Free Comic Book Day book aimed at introducing the characters of the Top Cow universe.

The 13 issue series will be broken into 4-issue arcs, with the first arc drawn by Michael Broussard. There will be a second and third arc of four issues with separate artistic teams, and the final 13th issue will be “something special,” said Sablik.

The book will feature a variety of variant cover incentives, as well as an incentive across the series for a set of exclusive playing cards.

Comic News: Robert Kirkman Will Give Keynote at ComicsPRO 2010

From the official press release:

Image Comics’ makes an exclusive appearance at this year’s ComicsPRO annual meeting, featuring Robert Kirkman!

Many of the nation’s top comic book retailers will converge on Memphis, TN this April for ComicsPRO’s Annual Members Meeting, and WALKING DEAD creator and Image COO Robert Kirkman will be delivering the keynote speech. Image Comics will also be making an exclusive appearance at the 2010 retailer event.

“While reviewing our options for the 2010 calendar, Image Comics has decided to put its focus for retailer events on ComicsPRO,” said Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson. “We feel the organization does a massive amount of good for the comics industry and with the ever-growing amount of competing events, we felt the need to reaffirm our support for our retail partners by making our appearance at this year’s annual meeting our sole retailer event for 2010.”

ComicsPRO is the only trade organization for Direct Market comic book retailers. Their goals are not that different from trade organizations in other industries: to promote advocacy, education and opportunity for their members. Each annual meeting focuses on the many issues this unified, yet independent retailer organization faces and works towards building a stronger future. In addition to Kirkman, Stephenson and Image PR & Marketing Coordinator Joe Keatinge will also attend. The company’s decision to so strongly support this year’s annual meeting has been met with great enthusiasm by members of ComicsPRO’s Board of Directors.

ComicsPRO President and Flying Colors Comics owner Joe Field added: “When a key supplier like Image Comics decides that their time, energy and focus are best spent meeting with ComicsPRO retailers in Memphis, it highlights the dedication Image has to professional, dedicated comics specialty retailers. We hope more retailers notice this and make plans to join us for the only retailer-directed trade event in the comics’ business.”

“What I admire most about Image Comics is its commitment to creators and their independence,” ComicsPRO Board of Directors member and Comix Experience owner Brian Hibbs said. “It’s amazing to see that same level of commitment and passion being brought to bear for the benefit of the independent comic book retailer as well. This energy and support can’t help but make the best retailer-focused event that much better!”

The ComicsPRO Annual Members Meeting is March 24-27th, 2010 at the Hilton Memphis. For more information on the meeting, visit ComicsPRO.

Top Cow Announces 'Let Us Win YOU Over' Initiative

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

TOP COW TO GIVE AWAY TENS OF THOUSANDS OF FREE COMICS IN 2009

‘LET US WIN YOU OVER’ INITIATIVE

Innovative, new program will give away free Top Cow comics through participating retailers across the United States and Canada

LOS ANGELES, Calif., December 29, 2008 – Top Cow Productions, Inc. announced today it will launch the Let Us Win YOU Over initiative in February 2009 that will see the publisher distribute thousands of free comics a month to new readers through participating retailers across the United States and Canada.

Over the course of the yearlong promotion, Top Cow will send 200 free comics each to 25 comic book stores per month (a total of 5,000 free comics per month). Each month, a different set of stores, each month a different free comic. The stores will be spread out geographically and demographically.

Combined with the books it plans to give away during Free Comic Book Day on May 2, 2009 and the many books Top Cow gives away at various conventions across the country, the publisher stands to give away up to 200,000 free comics during the year.

Top Cow’s goal with the Let Us Win YOU Over initiative is threefold: to invite new readers to give Top Cow comics a try and win them over to their line of titles; to generate buzz and excitement for fans and the retailers they support; and to pump some much-needed energy into an industry not immune to the current economic crisis.

“We feel strongly that Top Cow titles are the best they’ve ever been and it’s important for to invite readers and retailers to discover why,” explained Top Cow Publisher Filip Sablik. “While our competitors are straining the wallet of the average fan, Top Cow is making it easy to try new comics.”

So as to not slight existing readers who are already buying Top Cow titles, the publisher will also ship each participating store exclusive Customer Appreciation covers for each subscriber of that month’s free comic. It will be limited exclusively to the subscriber fans at the participating stores for that month.

Top Cow initially opened the Let Us Win YOU Over program to members of the comics retailer group, ComicsPRO, because of the organization’s commitment to banding together to ensure a strong and healthy retailer community.

“ComicsPRO retailers are eager to support this innovative promotion, with the hope of proving that new ideas can lead to new readers for quality titles,” said ComicsPRO President Joe Field. “Our mutual goals with this program are to expose thousands of new eyes to Top Cow's singular brand of comics and to lead more readers to enjoying Top Cow comics and buying them from ComicsPRO member stores.”

“Our stores always looks for great ways to promote comics and connect readers to new stories they might not have given a second thought to before in the past,” said Michael Malve, owner of Arizona-based chain Atomic Comics and a member of ComicsPRO. “So when we heard of this very progressive marketing idea that Top Cow was coming up with, well, let’s just say we were one of the first to dive in.”

“We at Atomic Comics have worked hand in hand with many publishers over our 22 years in the business,” Malve added. “And in that time, Top Cow has been one of the easiest to work with. They have always made themselves available to retailers and listened to our concerns, as most recently noted in their $2.99 in 2009 announcement. I really look forward to this promotion and I hope other retailers embrace and take full advantage of a great opportunity that Top Cow is offering us with their Let us Win YOU Over campaign.”

Retailers who are not members of ComicsPRO and are interested in participating will be able to sign up through their Diamond Comics Distributors customer service representative in the next several weeks.

Top Cow Praises ComicsPRO Annual Meeting

I had the pleasure of attending the 2008 ComicsPRO Annual Meeting in Las Vegas a few weekends ago and described it as, "Top Cow was proud to be both a sponsor and an active participant in the 2008 ComicsPRO Annual Membership Meeting. We found the gathering to be one of the most fruitful and productive opportunities we've had in a long time to interact with our direct market retail partners."
ComicsPRO is a retailer organization dedicated to the health and progress of direct market comic book retailers. I'd highly recommend any direct market retailer to join. Find out what others had to say as well.
