Newsarama: It's Samurais vs. Vampire in Image's SHINKU

Image Comics is being taken over by samurai and vampires.

That’s the story coming out of Comic-Con International: San Diego and the Image Comics Show panel Friday, as a new ongoing series pitting vampire versus samurai was announced. Shinku, by writer Ron Marz (Witchblade, Green Lantern) and Lee Moder (Painkiller Jane, Dragon Prince), tells the store of an epic confrontation between two feuding Japanese clans – one vampire, one human – and the modern day high-noon showdown with the last surviving human and an underground army of vampires.

Although it’s first full issue isn’t set to debut until Spring 2011, Shinku was first glimpsed with an “ashcan” Marz & Moder released last year during the convention season, which is still available via Westfield Comics. Newsarama covered Shinku back then during its early days, and we return to the title upon the news that its been greenlit as an ongoing series at Image Comics. For more, we talked with Ron Marz by phone about the project

Comic News: Robert Kirkman Will Give Keynote at ComicsPRO 2010

From the official press release:

Image Comics’ makes an exclusive appearance at this year’s ComicsPRO annual meeting, featuring Robert Kirkman!

Many of the nation’s top comic book retailers will converge on Memphis, TN this April for ComicsPRO’s Annual Members Meeting, and WALKING DEAD creator and Image COO Robert Kirkman will be delivering the keynote speech. Image Comics will also be making an exclusive appearance at the 2010 retailer event.

“While reviewing our options for the 2010 calendar, Image Comics has decided to put its focus for retailer events on ComicsPRO,” said Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson. “We feel the organization does a massive amount of good for the comics industry and with the ever-growing amount of competing events, we felt the need to reaffirm our support for our retail partners by making our appearance at this year’s annual meeting our sole retailer event for 2010.”

ComicsPRO is the only trade organization for Direct Market comic book retailers. Their goals are not that different from trade organizations in other industries: to promote advocacy, education and opportunity for their members. Each annual meeting focuses on the many issues this unified, yet independent retailer organization faces and works towards building a stronger future. In addition to Kirkman, Stephenson and Image PR & Marketing Coordinator Joe Keatinge will also attend. The company’s decision to so strongly support this year’s annual meeting has been met with great enthusiasm by members of ComicsPRO’s Board of Directors.

ComicsPRO President and Flying Colors Comics owner Joe Field added: “When a key supplier like Image Comics decides that their time, energy and focus are best spent meeting with ComicsPRO retailers in Memphis, it highlights the dedication Image has to professional, dedicated comics specialty retailers. We hope more retailers notice this and make plans to join us for the only retailer-directed trade event in the comics’ business.”

“What I admire most about Image Comics is its commitment to creators and their independence,” ComicsPRO Board of Directors member and Comix Experience owner Brian Hibbs said. “It’s amazing to see that same level of commitment and passion being brought to bear for the benefit of the independent comic book retailer as well. This energy and support can’t help but make the best retailer-focused event that much better!”

The ComicsPRO Annual Members Meeting is March 24-27th, 2010 at the Hilton Memphis. For more information on the meeting, visit ComicsPRO.

CBR: Image Celebrates Their Firsts

Free Comic Book Day is one of the only days in the year that a comic book fan can randomly select an issue from his or her local shop and feel absolutely zero guilt over investigating a title with little to no previous knowledge, but the folks at Image Comics are doing their part to ensure that a few other days in the year are met with a similarly guilt-free attitude. At the end of March, Image is launching Image Firsts, a campaign that sees the reprinting of the first issues from ten popular Image titles over the course of five weeks, all for the meager price of $1.00 a pop.

Image Firsts isn't relegated only to titles from Image Central, as Top Cow's flagship series "Witchblade" also made the cut. For their own part, the decision-makers at Top Cow have done their best to get books into as many hands as possible with initiatives like the "Let Us Win You Over" campaign. "Whether it's introductory priced trades at $4.99 or $9.99, free comic giveaway programs, or reprinting entire issues of up-and-coming titles in established titles like 'The Walking Dead,' we've taken major steps to capture new readership," said Top Cow Publisher Filip Sablik. "The Image Firsts program is another great way for new readers to check out long-running titles and for existing readers to get the experience of what it was like to pick a book like 'Witchblade' #1 off the stands over a decade ago."

The Weekly Crisis: Image Comics - An Introductory Primer

Image Comics, the poster boy for the 90's extreme comics, has seen drastic shifts in focus throughout the past decade and quickly became Andrenn's favourite publisher, mostly based on the quality of the books they are publishing but he also has a bit of history and nostolgia towards them.

Andrenn Jones brings you today's guest post intro primer on Image Comics:

Witchblade
Creative Team: Ron Marz (writer) Stjepan Sejic (Artist)
Where to Start: Witchblade #131 (October 2009)

Comments: At one point, I considered Witchblade one of the best ongoing series each month, but that was a while back, shortly before the big “War of the Witchblades” arc in mid-2009. Since then, the title has definitely lost some of its magic but has still been an enjoyable read each month.

Witchblade has always been a fun read. Great characters and lots of great action. Marz excels at both and can take just about anything and make it work for the story. One thing that’s really worked is the romance between Sara and Gleason. Rather then them meet and then date for five issues and have them fall in love as is the standard for most comic book romances, Marz has been taken a slower and more realistic approach to their relationship. It’s been long building and just now did Sara admit her love for Gleason. It feels real and makes you care more about the characters and their relationship.

I have to mention the gorgeous art by Sejic. It's amazing stuff and he somehow manages to keep it up each and every month without delay, even doing most events and side projects related to Witchblade. A great artist that can actually get the books out on schedule, now that’s awesome. He’s signed on until issue #150 but Marz has talked about working with him beyond that point.

Verdict - Buy It. I give Witchblade a strong recommendation. Great characters and all around strong writing, gorgeous art and it’s a tonne of fun to read each month. While no longer my favourite comic each month, it’s still one of the best comics out there right now to me.

Image United
Creative Team: Robert Kirkman (Writer) Erik Larsen, Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, Jim Valentino, Marc Silvestri, Whilce Portacio (Artists)
Where to Start: Image United #1 (November 2009)

Comments: All right, I’ll come clean on this one. Image United is pretty much for the diehard of the diehard Image fans. If you don’t like Image Comics or haven't really read anything beyond Invincible or Chew, you will not like Image United. This is a comic made for the fans that grew up with these heroes like I did. Image United is guilty of being a comic made to appeal to that hardcore Image fanbase that loved Spawn and Savage Dragon and wants to see those heroes teaming up and drawn by their creators. In short, it's Marvel vs DC for Image fans.

One of the hooks of Image United is that six of Image's founders unite to draw their creations. Any character from Spawn is drawn by Todd McFarlane, anyone from Shadowhawk is drawn by Jim Valentino and so on for each artist. So if there’s a scene with Savage Dragon teaming up with Cyberforce and beating up a Youngblood villain, Erik Larsen drew Dragon, Marc Silvestri drew Cyberforce and Rob Liefeld drew the Youngblood villain.

It's amazing seeing all of these artists come together, contrasting the various styles and just seeing how great it all looks in this eclectic mishmash of art styles. Even Liefeld does a good job here, which is saying something.

But what about the story? Well it’s really simple. Good guys fight bad guys with a big mystery threat behind these events pushing everyone into action. Nothing new as far as comics are concerned and nothing too amazing as far as what one could expect from Robert Kirkman. It's a spectacle story and accomplishes what it sets out to do.

Verdict - Check It. There is some strong appeal to Image United for readers both new and old. However, ifl if you didn’t like Image before, Image United won’t change your opinion. It’s a solid read with gorgeous art, but more a guilty pleasure for the fans in the same vein as Marvel vs DC or other such events.

CBR: Robert Kirkman Discusses Image United: Interlude

In March, Robert Kirkman — the author of "Image United" alongside illustrators and Image Comics founders Erik Larsen, Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, Whilce Portacio, Marc Silvestri and Jim Valentino — will provide the proper "Image United" series with a month long reprieve. In its place is "Image United: Interlude" #1, a special one-shot issue that focuses on the surrounding heroes of the Image Universe that weren't created by Image's founders and haven't been seen in "Image United" yet. In other words, it's a way for the universe's other characters to get involved in the company's biggest crossover event to date.

The Weekly Crisis Ponders Image Firsts

In another edition of The Weekly Crisis' Kirk's Soapbox--A Collection of Random Thoughts, Kirk focuses on Image's new Image Firsts initiative.

Image Comics got in on the $1 comics action recently with the announcement of Image Firsts. I'm not going to get all negative on them for reaching out to new readers with affordable comics and actually commend them for jumping on the bandwagon DC started with the After Watchmen promotion (Vertigo also does the occasional $1 first issue for new series), but some of the choices for issues to spotlight left me a bit confused.

The choices of Spawn, Savage Dragon, Witchblade and Youngblood leave me a little confused. These are titles that have been going on for years and have seen significant changes in that time.

For example, Witchblade, as guest poster Mike Panetta pointed out, has changed drastically in style and tone since Ron Marz took over. They are even promoting the new run with free trades with any purchase at InStockTrades.com. Why not spotlight Marz's first issue, Witchblade #80, or more recent story arcs? If I pick up Witchblade #1 for a $1, where do I go from there? Witchblade Vol 1: Witch Hunt, as the trade is listed on Amazon.com, is actually Ron Marz's first arc on the title. You'd have to pick up the Witchblade Compendium, which contains the first 50 issues, to find more of the same as the Witchblade #1 issue you just bought.

Darkness/Pitt's Dale Keown Provides Guest Variant for Image United

Darkness/Pitt's artist Dale Keown is the latest of guest variant artists for Image United. Pick up the upcoming Image United #3 to see his cover.

Via Image's Official PR:

Image's series of guest variants for IMAGE UNITED continues this February with a cover by Pitt creator Dale Keown. The all-new image will adorn the third issue of the six-issue miniseries by Image's founders and will be available both in color and in black and white.

"There are a handful of creators outside the founders with a close association to Image, with Dale very high on that list, so getting him onboard for a guest variant was no-brainer," explained Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson. "Between this cover and the recently completed DARKNESS/PITT miniseries, it's a great time for fans of Dale's artwork, and we're all thrilled to have him involved."

Dale Keown's cover features the Image heroes facing off against the IMAGE UNITED's Big Bad, Omega Spawn, both as a nod to the opening pages of series' first issue and as precursor of things to come. Retailers can order as many copies of the color version as they like, but there will also be a limited edition 1:100 version of the cover in pristine black and white, available to qualifying accounts.

IMAGE UNITED #3, a 32-page full color comic book with a cover price of $3.99, will be in-stores February 24.

Heroes Online Digs Image and Murderer

Has anyone else noticed that Image Comics seems to be on a roll these days?

The creator-centric comic company that was maligned in the past (like when they first launched in 1990s) for churning out crappy and late comics has been, as of late, publishing some really great books.

Honestly, I can’t remember the last time I was reading so many Image books — or the last time I actually got excited about the company’s offerings.

I mean, I was digging The Walking Dead and Invincible (both written by Robert Kirkman) before, but my love for Kirkman’s work led me to his newest books: Murderer (part of Top Cow’s Pilot Season program) and Haunt (which he works on with Todd McFarlane). I loved Murderer, which got me interested in other Top Cow comics. And I fell for Haunt, which got me taking a second look at Todd McFarlane again — so I started reading Spawn after a looooong break. And that led me to Image United, the crossover blockbuster that’s drawn by all the Image founders.

All that said, if you’re one of those readers who swore off Image years ago, do yourself a favor and give the company another look.
