Witchblade/The Darkness/Angelus Trinity: Blood on the Sands reviewed

Hot on the heals of the recent Witchblade Annual comes another one-shot from publishers Top Cow.

This publication - Blood on the Sands - is a historical look at The Darkness/Witchblade/Angelus trinity and takes place in the Arabian desert in the 14th century. The book actually consists of three short stories focusing on the relevant hosts of The Darkness, Witchblade and Angelus at that time in history.

Review: Trinity- Witchblade / Darkness / Angelus: Blood of Sands #1

Trinity- Witchblade / Darkness / Angelus: Blood of Sands #1 begins by introducing us to three incredibly powerful talismans, each one tied to another, and each tied to a different theme. The one reader will be most familiar with is that of the Witchblade, a weapon with incredible powers that separates in to two versions: one which can be used to heal and defend, and the other with a darker side, almost hell bent on destruction. The other two weapons featured are the Darkness and the Angelus, which seem to some extent to be potentially more powerful then the Witchblade itself. This seems quite plausible if one is to believe the canon, or history of the Witchblade: having been birthed (or possibly forged) by both the Darkness and the Angelus. Although this story focuses mainly on some of the history of the weapons, I hope this will translate for the readers into seeing more of these origin tales further along in the Witchblade series.

Blood on the Sands steps into the wayback machine, taking the focus off the current goings-on of the Top Cow universe for a bit. Instead, this one-shot takes place in 13th-century Arabia, telling three separate tales of the bearers of power in that time. As has been stated many times, the Witchblade, the Darkness, and the Angelus have all been around for centuries, but I never stopped to think about what life was like for those who bore the powers before modern times.

Broken Frontier reviews Trinity: Blood on the Sands

Sure, one could very well question the need for this one-shot, but it’s a nice breather from the hectic battles going on in the Top Cow titles as of late. It reminded me of the great Elseworlds annuals and mini-series that DC put out with such regularity back in the day. Those tales were always off-centre gazes at familiar characters through varied prisms. You won’t find Jackie Estacado or Sara Pezzini in Blood on the Sands however, but it is an enjoyably brief look at the history of the Trinity.

Best Shots @ Newsarama Reviews Trinity: Blood on the Sands

Last week, we showcased a 5 page preview of the Top Cow trinity one-shot Trinity: Blood on the Sands. To be quite honest, there is a lot of story in this 25-page issue. It doesn't have just one story, but three self-containing ones that are sure to please Top Cow fans. It features the bearers of the Darkness, Witchblade and Angelus trinity during the 14th Century in the Arabian desert. Now first off, the character design is phenomenal. From the Darkness' (Idris) iron horse to the bearer of the dark half of the Witchblade (Amali), it's all really well done.

Comicvine reviews Witchblade/The Darkness/Angelus Trinity: Blood on the Sands

Top Cow is giving us a look at the Darkness, Witchblade and Angelus from long ago. We know that the forces have sought out human hosts throughout time. With Trinity: Blood On The Sands, we see three of those hosts in the Arabian desert during the 14th Century.

The comic does a nice job of giving us a look at a tiny bit of the history of this "Trinity." While it is an interesting and informative look, I'm not sure how it would appeal to casual readers or Top Cow's comics. If you are a fan of the Darkness, Witchblade and Angelus, there's a good chance you'll want to check this out. To me, the most interesting part was seeing the parallels of the Witchblade being separated among two hosts as we currently have with Sara and Dani. Perhaps some things are simply fated to happen.
