Newsarama's Best Shots Review: Angelus #5

This mini-series has excelled in showcasing Dani as a stand-alone kind of character and out of Sara Pezzini's shadow. The action is terrific, the dialog is clever and crisp and the art is beyond superb. Anyway we can get this into an ongoing, Top Cow?

Newsarama Best Shots Advanced Reviews: Witchblade #137

Review by Vanessa Gabriel

I like it when I am surprised. I had not pulled Witchblade previously, and this was a good read. I suppose I lucked out with this being a stand-alone story. The issue stars Abigail van Alstene; her back story and current circumstance. Abby crosses paths with Sara, thus inserting the character Necromancer back into Top Cow continuity.

Ron Marz introduces Abby seamlessly as she narrates the issue with her account of the recent events in her life. She has just relocated to Los Angeles from Colorado, is in her senior year of high school, has taken a liking to art classes, is under the tutelage of a 300 year old sorcerer to hone her magic, and can talk to the dead. Naturally, she takes a trip to New York with fellow art students to visit the museums, and ends up finding an ally in Sara Pezzini.

In just one issue, I heart Abigail van Alstene. I care about what is going to happen to her, and I want to know more, please.

Newsarama: Marz Talks NECROMANCER's Return in Top Cow's Witchblade

You can't keep a good character down. After years in publishing purgatory, Top Cow's Necromancer is returning in fine form in the pages of this month's Witchblade #137.

Necromancer was originally introduced back in 2005 with a miniseries by writer Joshua Ortega and superstar artist Francis Manapul. In the series, a teenage girl named Abby van Alstine is taken into a supernatural subculture and given powers she barely knows how to control. She's forced to learn about her new self and this new world she's fallen into, while trying to live through her own teenage years.

In the years since that 2005 miniseries, Necromancer has had sporadic appearances over the years with the most recent being a one-shot Pilot Season book over two years ago. Regardless of her intermittent appearances, a sizeable contingent of comic fans have taken a liking to the character. After years of hiatus, Necromancer is returning to the Top Cow universe in a big way – first with a guest appearance in July 28th's Witchblade #137 and then as a player in Top Cow's big event miniseries Artifacts. But before we get too far, first things first: her return in the pages of Witchblade #137 this month.

Crave Online Reviews Angelus #4

Stjepan Sejic who uses his brush to create almost fine art paintings for each page once again supplies the art. The traditional sense of “panels” is gone here replaced with a more fluid but still effective sense of differentiating the action. I usually find this kind of art tedious, especially in comics, but for Angelus it works. I was especially impressed with Sejic’s use of color to bring out both the backgrounds and the emotions of the characters.

Naturally this all leading into the epic Artifacts story arc that will intertwine Angelus, Witchblade, Darkness and most of the supernatural Top Cow titles. Whatever the ultimate goal is, Angelus #4 does a solid job of setting up it’s own part of the tale through solid storytelling and great art. If you dig any of these titles then Angelus won’t let you down.

Cosmic Book News Reviews Angelus #4

For me, it was the art of Stejpan Sejic that stole the show. His version of Cerberus is beautiful. Most of the time, mythology and fantasy readers had been taught Cerberus was basically a three-headed rottweiler (similar to fluffy in the first Harry Potter movie). But Sejic redefined Cerberus as something that would make H.R. Giger weep with envy.

The Quarter Bin Reviews Angelus #4

As Luke pointed out yesterday in his review of Velocity #1, one of Ron Marz’s greatest strengths is being able to convey things without having to completely spell them out for the reader. This is one of the reasons I’ve been enjoying Marz’s work on the Top Cow U so much; he’s doing a great job writing these characters, and Dani is no exception. Personally, I like Marz best when he’s accompanied by Stjepan Sejic, and this series really allows Sejic to creatively interpret the words of Marz into stunning images.

Even though the Top Cow U is full of strong, memorable female characters, Dani Baptiste still manages to stand out. I really dig where her story is headed right now, even if I’m not entirely sure how her actions as the Angelus will ultimately affect the other major powers in the Top Cow U, and I hope this creative team can keep that momentum going. Based on what I’ve seen so far, I don’t think it will be a problem.

Omnicomic Reviews Angelus #4

Marz, impressive as always, continues to weave enough storylines together to keep things interesting while not getting so bogged down that the story doesn’t progress. The bright colors and contrast between the forces of Angelus and Darkness are well drawn and just have images that pop off the page as Sejic continues to do a great job. I enjoy every comic in this universe from Witchblade to Magdalena and Angelus is no exception. Marz has designed and brought to fruition a really wonderful group of books and if you aren’t reading them all…what are you waiting for?

Hollywood Jesus Reviews Angelus #4

The ages long battle between dark and light take center stage in the Top Cow universe. Dani Baptiste, former bearer of the Witchblade, is the new Angelus. The Angelus is a being who chooses a host, and then is locked in a never ending battle with The Darkness (a position currently held by Jackie Estacado). Usually, when Angelus chooses a host, it takes complete control. But with Dani, it’s different, she still has her free will intact. Hopefully this is something that Ron Marz will explore later on in the series.

Player Affinity Reviews Angelus #4

This is artist Stjepan Sejic's second pairing with Ron Marz as they also worked on Witchblade. Sejic does a great job of making the two books look distinctly different but equally amazing. His style is colored wonderfully while giving a crisp metal look to everything. Cerberus' design is beautiful as it resembles something out of the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. Really the art is very impressive and probably the strongest element of the issue.

Whether you're a fan of Top Cow or not this book is a solid read and definitely one of the stronger titles written by Marz. It's a must read if you're going to pick up Top Cow's Artifacts as it clearly factors heavily into that story as well.

Battlemouth Reviews Angelus #4

This issue works pretty well on its own, even though it’s part of a larger series and is currently building towards the massive Artifacts crossover wherein the entirety of the Top Cow universe is going to clash. Ron Marz keeps things light and fast-paced, and avoids getting bogged down in the details of continuity. As someone who’s new to the Top Cow universe, this was a godsend, but there were a few times where I felt a bit lost since the story deals with some heavy mythology.

If this issue does something right, it’s that it made me want to pick up the next issue and it’s even made me consider giving Artifacts a shot. Sometimes, diving in headfirst is the way to go in comics. This time it worked out pretty well for me.

Hollywood Jesus Reviews Witchblade Vol 7 tpb

The new era of Witchblade featuring the creative team of writer Ron Marz and artist Stjepan Sejic continues! The pair committed to staying on the title until at least issue #150 and their second complete arc together entitled “Crown Heights” is collected in this trade paperback. More importantly, this storyline sets the stage for and leads directly into War of the Witchblades. The volume collects Witchblade #120-#124 plus a cover gallery featuring Stjepan Sejic, Matt Haley, Tyler Kirkham, and plenty of other bonus materials.

Comic News Reviews Angelus #4

Four issues in and Angelus continues to weave a very strong and interesting story. The battle between light and dark comes to a head as the Angelus finds herself in the grip of The Darkness.

Angelus #4 provides us with a battle of light versus dark, a truce, a romance, and a betrayal. Basically all the makings of a great story. Angelus #4 seriously picks up the pace as we draw closer to Top Cows Artifacts crossover event. That’s all I really have to say about the storyline of issue #4, I don’t want to ruin the story for you, I’m sure you understand.

What I will tell you about the book is Stjepan Sejic truly excels in delivering breathtaking artwork. Angelus is one of the best illustrated comic books on the market today. Sejic’s depiction of Cerebrus goes down as the best I have ever seen. Personally, I could take a comic consisting of nothing more than Sejic illustrations, lacking any words and find myself completely satisfied. That is certainly not a knock on the writing skills of Ron Marz as his stories are always engaging, interesting and very entertaining to read and that holds oh so true with this comic book.

Image Addiction Reviews Angelus #4

If you have not been reading Top Cow’s titles over the last several years you may be unaware of the universe that has been developing, guided by some very creative people. Several years of planning and developing are now unfolding in the pages of titles like Witchblade, Magdalena, the Darkness, Pandora’s Box, and this series – Angelus. They are all building toward the upcoming year-long event called “Artifacts”. The event is almost upon us, and this issue just pushes us one step closer as Dani Baptiste, host of the Angelus, and Jackie Estacado, host of the Darkness, come face-to-face in battle and Sabine comes closer to making her move against the Dani.
