Filip Sablik on Blog@Newsarama: "Proactive, Not Reactive"

Top Cow Pubisher Filip Sablik takes to Newsarama with another guest post, Proactive, Not Reactive.

Like most people in the US, I was stunned and horrified by the horrible damage suffered by the people of Haiti after they were hit with a 7.0 earthquake last week. And like many, I did what I could do to aid in the disaster relief efforts by donating to a worthy charity. It got me thinking, why do we wait until a disaster to help out the little guy?

Would the people of Haiti be suffering in the same way now if we had been proactive in helping their improvised nation raise their standard of living and infrastructure? In this Op-Ed from the New York Times, David Brooks points out that a similar earthquake in San Francisco killed 63 people as opposed to the 72,000 reported killed in Haiti by CNN. Brooks suggests that the tragedy in Haiti is a result of poverty, not a natural disaster. Further more, we aren’t tackling the problem in the most effective manner.

But why do we wait until over 70,000 people die in Haiti before mobilizing into action?

Is it part of human nature? Or something inherent about living in a country where despite economic hardship, we’re all living comfortably compared to much of the rest of the world?

This train of thought brought me to other parallels (albeit smaller in scale and importance).

Blog@Newsarama Filip Sablik: “My First Time”

First memories are a powerful thing. Your first kiss, your first time driving, your first R-rated movie, the first time you saw your future wife/husband, and so many, many more. For those of us that love comics, we have memories tied into our love of the medium. The first comic we read, the first time a story or piece of art moved us, our first comic convention, the first creator we met in person, and so many, many more first memories. The one I want to talk about today is my first signing event.

Filip Sablik: “Can’t Hardly Wait”

So what’d you do this weekend?

One night this past weekend, the wife and I invited some friends over for some Chinese takeout and to watch “Can’t Hardly Wait”. The crew included fellow comic pros Archaia Studio Press’ Mel Caylo, freelance writer and editor Rob Levin, and artist Nelson Blake II. “Can’t Hardly Wait” is a seminal high school flick from the 1990s. If you haven’t had a chance to check it out, I highly recommend it.

Filip Sablik discusses “the New Letter Hacks”

I think people my age and older have a great fondness for letter columns in comics. Before the Internet it was our one way to communicate with the creators and editors who made the comics we loved. The only other way was conventions and back then there wasn’t one every other weekend all over the country. Something I’ve been pondering recently is the disappearance of printed letter columns in comics.

The Comical Life of Troy Hickman #4: A Little of Column A, A Little of Column B…

Last time I talked a bit about how to behave at conventions regarding editors and such, and it got me thinking about conventions in general. I LOVE comic conventions. Love them love them love them. I love them like Tristan loved Isolde. I love them like Brad loves Angelina. I love them like an inbred mountain man loves Ned Beatty, and with almost as much tenderness.

Let me share with you, then, just a few of my more memorable convention moments:

Blog@Newsarama Filip Sablik: “A Feel-Good Kill”

When I agreed to do this regular blog column for Blog@Newsarama I told myself that I would avoid using it as a platform to shill books I was publishing. That is after all, what press releases are for. And that’s still my intent, but I hope you’ll forgive me if I indulge and occasionally tell you about something we’re doing at Top Cow that I think is worth a second look. Today, I wanted to let you know about a new title we’re launching in June called Berserker.

Is Imitation the Finest Form of Flattery?

Wednesday, in his latest Blog@Newsarama entry, Top Cow E-i-C Filip Sablik addressed an issue that seems to be getting more and more attention these days - the future of comic books online and on mobile devices.

More specifically, Sablik wondered aloud what will be the correct price point for downloadable comic books if and when the distribution channel gains real popularity and a viable revenue model for publishers presents itself.

New Blog@Newsarama post by Filip Sablik "Random Rumblings"

This week is yet another busy one here at TC HQ, so rather than one long form entry I thought I’d jot down a few scattered thoughts. Particularly since I’m already a week behind my normal Blog@Newsarama schedule.

Topic 1: I had an interesting conversation recently where the conversation of what the correct price point for digital comics is. Should it be the same as the printed comic so as to not disadvantage brick and mortar comic retailers? Follow the iTunes model of 99¢ per issue? Or is it free?

Filip Sablik talks about Breaking into Comics

Okay, I admit this week’s Blog title is a bit of a cheap attention grab. But you’re reading, right? My title refers to a Blog@Newsarama article that my buddy Randal Jarrell, Managing Editor at Oni Press, posted last week. He addressed a popular topic – “How do you go from aspiring creator to comic book professional?” – and did an admirable job of explaining how comics are a lot like “American Idol”. No really, he did a much better job explaining it, so give his column a read.

Troy Hickman Blogs@Newsarama about Breaking In

Since I started this column, I’ve heard from a number of folks who want me to write something about how to break into the comics business. I suppose that would be a natural, given that (A) I’m a teacher and tend to be didactic, and (B) I’m still relatively new to this, so I’m fairly fresh from the womb (and the metaphorical doctor probably slapped my backside AFTER he read some of my comics).

Perhaps the best way to go about it, though, would be to start with what you SHOULD NOT do if you’re hoping to get into the comics business. Since a lot of folks go the route of trying to sell themselves at conventions, that’s a good place to start. A few thoughts:

The Beat comments on Filip Sablik's "Be Nice" blog entry

Over at Blog@ Top Cow’s Filip Sablik has some reminders for polite message board discourse:

So what’s the point of this rant? I’d ask you to think the next time you go to post that angry, ill conceived post on Newsarama or your favorite message board. Take a moment to see if you can inject a little bit of civility and respect into your commentary. Because what took you 15-30 minutes to read and 1 minute to comment on, took an entire team of people months of blood, sweat, and tears to create. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying you shouldn’t critique books you don’t like (although if you haven’t read a title for 10 years, you probably should keep silent), but I am suggesting you express your critique in a constructive, respectful way. Think about it, you wouldn’t want me coming into your place of work and telling you that you’re doing your job poorly. Unless you are my local Starbucks barista, in which case I will let you know when my Grande Low Fat, No Sugar, two pump Cinnamon Dolce Latte isn’t up to snuff.

We have to admit that this is a pet peeve of ours as well — not that many comics that are produced aren’t crummy, but the glee with which message board regulars love to jump on their favorite pro whipping boys is tedious and uninformed.

Troy Hickman Details His Comical Life on Blog@Newsarama

Y’know, thankfully a lot of folks seem to enjoy my comics, and I’d like to think I’m fairly good at what I do. I will be the first to tell you, however, that I will occasionally make a blunder so big, pull a Munson so monumental, that people are forced to ask “which guy is Hickman on the ‘Evolution of Man’ chart?”

So, in the spirit of full disclosure, I give you…

Filip Sablik posts a new Blog @Newsarama

Here at Top Cow, we don’t publish a lot of straight up superhero comics. Most of the stuff we do is rooted more in other genres like horror, supernatural, sci-fi, espionage, and so on. Even the superhero style projects we do like Wanted or Twilight Guardian tend to be a bit left (or right) of center. I (like almost all fanboys) grew up on a steady diet of superhero comics. My first love was The Uncanny X-Men during the Chris Claremont/Marc Silvestri/Jim Lee era. Years later, the 14-year-old part of me still can’t believe I’m working for one of the guys who initially got me excited about the art form. Thanks to George Perez and Marv Wolfman, I will always have a soft spot for The Teen Titans. But at some point in college I realized that my favorite superhero is Superman.

Troy Hickman begins his column on Blog@Newsarama

"So when it came time to write my first blog piece for Newsarama, I asked myself what I could bring to the table that was uniquely my own. Could it be the perspective of a bearded, overweight comics fan? Wow, that’s like carrying coals to Newcastle, or trying to sell Lemmy Kilmister on the benefits of facial wens. Perhaps I could talk about what it’s like to walk into a convention with a pro badge, and proudly notice everyone I pass eyeing it, right before they murmur “who the @#$% is Troy Hickman?” Nah, a column on that would serve only to make me long for the sweet release that oblivion will bring. I guess the obvious choice would be to use it to hype my upcoming Twilight Guardian mini-series, but hey, if I spent a lot of time trying to convince strangers to embrace something of mine, it’d be like dating again."

New entry on Filip’s Blog @Newsarama talks about how a little variety is the spice of life

I love ice cream. It’s one of my many vices and I’m cool with that. Chocolate and vanilla are old standbys because they pair well with just about anything. Pie? Good. Cake? Good. Cookies? Good. Bananas, nuts, and candy? Good. A nice filet mignon? Probably not, but I’d be willing to try it.

As much as those two flavors are standbys and consistently the most popular flavors in surveys, I do love to experiment with different flavors. Hit me with some Peanut Butter Cup, Mint Chocolate Chip, Cookies & Cream, Rocky Road, or any number of more unique combinations and I’m a happy man. What does this have to do with comics?

In the last couple of weeks, I’ve seen a bunch of “Best” lists online for top picks of comics and graphic novels for 2008 and couldn’t help but notice how heavily dominated they are by Big Two books. When I scan the list of top-selling books from Diamond each month on Icv2, I can’t help but notice the lack of what I would call independent titles. In the top 25 comics last month, there was only one non-Marvel, non-DC title – Buffy, The Vampire Slayer – an excellent read, but a licensed property with its roots in television. In the top 50, only two others – Angel (same boat as Buffy) and The Umbrella Academy. The Umbrella Academy gives me a little bit of hope, because it’s a fantastic, unique comic that doesn’t rely on a pre-established licensed property, but that’s only one out of 50! The top 100 looks a bit better, but only slightly so with the addition of The Walking Dead, Spawn, Conan the Cimmerian (licensed again) and Black Terror from Dynamite Entertainment.

Filip Sablik’s blog @ Newsarama launches with an explanation on what went into the decision to stay $2.99 in 2009

Howdy, gang. I’m Filip Sablik and I get to live this fanboy’s dream of waking up every morning as the Publisher of Top Cow Productions. Troy Brownfield was kind enough to invite me ramble on occasionally as part of the new Blog @ Newsarama. I was originally planning on starting off with the obligatory introductory post letting you know who I am, but we’ve been getting some attention in the last week online because of an announcement we made recently. And since only my mom and my wife are really interested in hearing me talk about myself, I’ve decided to talk about Top Cow’s pledge to maintain a cover price of $2.99 in 2009.

If this is the first you’ve heard about this topic you can check out Matt Brady’s interview with yours truly HERE. I’ll wait.

Oh, you’re a faithful Newsarama reader and you’re already familiar with the topic? Great. Then let’s get into it.

For the most part the reaction’s been really positive. Fans and retailers seem to appreciate that a publisher is at least addressing the growing concern over rising prices on just about everything. But as it is on the Internet, where would we be without some cynical responses and pointed questions? READ MORE.
