Flashback: Flames rising C2E2 post show wrap up.

Top Cow Productions had a big appearance at the show as well. NFL football star Lance Briggs from the Chicago Bears spoke about his love for THE DARKNESS. Be sure to check out Lance’s Comic World to see him on a cover of THE DARKNESS. (Mind you, things do not end well for Lance’s character…) Several of the Top Cow Productions writers and artists were on hand to offer their thoughts about the show. Top Cow artist Jeremy Haun had this to share with us about his thoughts on C2E2, “The amount of talent and scale for a first show is just incredible.”

Flashback: Briggs on video talks comics

Yes, you read that right. Today, we bring to you a very special interview with 5-time Pro-Bowl Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs. But the Chicago Bears? Linebacker? Pro-Bowl? “That’s football stuff!” you proclaim. True, it is football. But Mr. Briggs also happens to be a huge comics fan. We’re not talking about “got caught on camera once looking at a Spider-Man comic” kind of a fan. We’re talking about real deal comics enthusiast. So much so that during our hometown comic convention, the inaugural Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo (better known as C2E2), Briggs hosted his own “dream panel,” talking to fans as well as some of his favorite comics creators. He’s a proclaimed Top Cow fan, and the publisher actually printed a variant cover of The Darkness featuring Briggs this month. That’s the kind of comics fan we’re talking. So it was our honor to catch up with Briggs following his panel to talk about his love for the medium, as well as his newly launched charity, the Briggs 4 Kidz Foundation. Bill interviewed, and Tom filmed. Go Bears!

The Comic Addiction Reviews Darkness #84

“The Three Deaths of Jackie Estacado”
Writer: Phil Hester
Pencils and Inks: Whilce Portacio
Colors: Arif Prianto of IFS
Letters: Troy Peteri
Cover A by Bagus Hutomo of IFS
Cover B Lance Briggs photo variant C2E2 Exclusive
Published by Top Cow Productions

Jackie Estacado (current bearer of The Darkness) has assembled a team to fight for revenge against the Sovereign. However, their ongoing mission has been interrupted by a team of Hunter-Killers who are under orders to take Jackie dead or alive. Unfortunately for the team of Hunter-Killers, they’re only the B Team and quite frankly don’t stand a chance against Jackie.

This issue gave Jackie a chance to further develop his skills and abilities as the power of The Darkness itself is limited only by light and a lack of imagination. Beyond that he’s learning that he can literally do just about anything. This was also the first issue in a while that featured Jackie and didn’t involve much of his Sovereign hunting team.

Overall this was a very strong issue leaving me wanting more.

What The Con: CBR's Top Cow C2E2 Panel Coverage

At this weekend's Chicago Comics & Entertainment Expo, Top Cow fans were treated to a panel filled with some of the company's most prominent creators including Phil Hester ("The Darkness"), Bryan Edward Hill ("Broken Trinity: Pandora's Box"), Nelson Blake II ("Magdalena") and Ron Marz ("Witchblade," "Angelus"). Top Cow Publisher Filip Sablik moderated the panel and covered a wide range of topics, starting with the company's major summer event - "Artifacts."

Launching in July and set to play out over the course of a year, "Artifacts" is written by Ron Marz and illustrated by a rotating lineup of artists beginning with Michael Broussard for the first four issues. The remaining artists are currently unannounced, though Sablik said the final issue's artist would raise several eyebrows. Three different covers for the first issue were displayed - a Dale Keown cover depicting a distraught Sara Pezzini restrained by Jackie Estacado was described as the story-oriented cover, while John Tyler Christopher's cover profiling Sara was revealed as the first of thirteen Artifact bearer-centric covers.

The cover that received the most attention was a jam piece illustrated by several different Top Cow artists. Marz and Blake identified each artist's contribution as follows: Michael Broussard drew Tom Judge and Jackie Estacado, Sheldon Mitchell drew Sabine and Alina Enstrom, Kenneth Rocafort drew Michael "Finn" Finnegan and Glorianna "Glori" Silver, Marc Silvestri drew Danielle Baptiste, Stjepan Sejic drew Sara Pezzini, and Blake himself drew Necromancer and Magdalena. The panelists were quick to point to three mysterious emblems on the cover pertaining to the three Artifacts whose bearers have yet to be revealed.

Chicago Bears Linebacker Lance Briggs is an Image and Top Cow Kind of Guy

The A.V. Club took some time out to sit down with Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs about what makes him happy --- comics.

AVC: What titles do you read right now?

LB: My favorite comic right now is The Darkness. To me, it's just a great story. He's got great powers, and his interactions are just pretty cool. He's got issues where he fights Superman, and Lara Croft, Witchblade, things like that — it's just pretty cool.

AVC: Are you more of an Image guy than a Marvel or DC guy?

LB: Yeah, more into the Image and Top Cow stuff now. I got into that when I was in high school, when Image was fairly new, and Spawn, Shadowhawk, Wildcats, Stormwatch, all of these storylines were very appealing to me. Of course, I'm still a Marvel fan—I still pick up X-Men and Spider-Man. I pick up DC, as well—I get Justice League, Green Lantern, stuff like that. But by far, Top Cow and Image stuff is my favorite.

AVC: Have you ever given any thought to making comics of your own?

LB: Well, actually, I'm working on some comics right now for Top Cow. I've got the opportunity to meet [Top Cow founder] Marc Silvestri, which I'm just stoked about. I'm really excited to meet him. So I'm taking some time, putting together some characters. Hopefully they like it.

Chicago Bears linebacker a big aficionado of genre comics

Lance Briggs sank into the squishy red upholstered chair at Challengers Comics on Western Avenue. He sank so deeply his chin peeked above the table top before him. And though he looked a bit uncomfortable, he smiled like a kid who just found the compatriots he never knew he had.

He turned to Tom Katers, who sat across from him, whose face was half the size of Briggs' neck, and he said, yes, he was like Katers, he was a member of their "secret society."

Briggs said later he doesn't usually admit to that, certainly not to his friends or his teammates.

Not that he's ashamed.

It's just that, well, you know, he works weekends, has this intense job, and doesn't meet many people as obsessed with comic books.

Indeed, Briggs, 29, may be the most nonchalant comic book geek in the world, understandably oblivious to the taunts and snickers that greet your average, physically less-intimidating hard-core enthusiast.

So there was Briggs at Challengers the other night, prowling its aisles, stooping to examine a cover, then adding it to the expanding mound of $3 issues he was gathering beneath his arm, his eyes never leaving the racks. He's a big reader of "The Darkness," "New X-Men," "Pitt," "Silver Surfer." His total bill, a couple of hours later: $154.54.

Lance Briggs can't wait for Darkness single issues

1 Bears linebacker and comic book fan Lance Briggs buys more single issues than trade paperbacks. Even die-hards wait for the paperbacks, which often collect a number of issues based around a certain story line in a handy, cheaper package. But you do have to wait, and Briggs can't wait.

2 He knows his stuff, who guest-starred where, which mutant is feuding with which sorcerer. ("I get behind," he said, "but I like getting behind because the nice thing is having someone say, 'You have to read this,' and I do and I get hooked again.")

3 His favorites are not trendy within comic-book circles or well-known to noncomic-book fans -- "The Darkness," "Pitt," for example.

4 He's a continuity freak -- he prefers comics that retain consistent plot threads over a series of years and throughout a variety of crossover titles. That's a point of dispute among aficionados, some of whom think it leaves comics inaccessible to newcomers.

5 He started a social-networking site dedicated to serious comic-book discussion: lancescomicworld.com.
