CBR's Robot 6: Rantz Hoseley on the launch of Longbox

The Longbox digital comics distribution system was first announced in June 2009 and was universally described as "iTunes for comics." In fact, it is much more than that: A platform-independent application that allows the user to buy and read comics digitally and move them from one device to another. Unlike the iTunes store, Longbox won't have strict content restrictions, but users can create subaccounts that will only allow browsing, purchase, and reading of comics below a given age rating. The public beta version becomes available today with a handful of titles, and developer and CEO Rantz Hoseley says new content will start appearing on a weekly basis beginning on June 29 and available at a discount "in recognition that we are still in beta."

I tried out the private beta last weekend, and the experience was pretty seamless: You look at a display of covers, buy the ones you want, download them, and read them in a comics reader on the screen. Hoseley talked to me last week about how Longbox will evolve as a platform for readers and for publishers.

What devices will Longbox launch on?

The upcoming launch is Mac and PC. Tablets, both in terms of the Apple generated ones and the Android and Windows Mobile 7 powered ones, will be early fall. We hope to be able to announce the date on that by San Diego, but the contract negotiations are taking a little longer than we would prefer. At the very least, in a worst case scenario we will be having it installed on the devices in question by New York Comic-Con.

GeekWeek: LongBox Goes Live!

Public Beta began today on Longbox, the comic book digital release platform that everyone has been talking about for what feels like a year...or maybe it was longer. Good news: The wait was worth it!

Dubbed "The Itunes of Comics," Longbox is pretty much exactly that-- while poising itself to be the platform to beat.

Go getcher Longbox: http://longboxdigital.com/now.html

There are a few free comics for you to test out, including Josh Fiakov and Kody Chamberlain's Punks, Man-of-Awesome: Ron Marz's Witchblade, and Wanted (which, if you haven't read is very different from the film version)--

Friends of the Cow: LongBox & Comics Alliance Having a Contest to Win $25 Worth of Free Digital Comics

LongBox, a new digital comics platform that's aiming to become the iTunes of comics, is about to launch its new Beta version at Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle this weekend. But while most of the world will only be able to read through a few watermarked sample comics until the wider release, ComicsAlliance readers will have an opportunity to get a wide range of comics through LBX before the general public -- and get them for free.

While LBX is still in Beta, Comics Alliance is going to be giving away 15 gift codes worth $25.00 each to 15 ComicsAlliance readers, which can be used toward anything in the LongBox store. With most LongBox comics priced at just $0.99 (and digital graphic novel collections priced around $5 to $10), winners will essentially walk away with up to 25 comics or several trade paperbacks.

Publishers like Top Cow, Boom!, Archaia, NBM, Shadowline and more have already been announced as participating, and will be offering their comics through the LBX store, along with creator-owned projects from individual creators like Jonathan Hickman ("Fantastic Four").

PW's The Beat: Top Cow has digital strategy!

PW's The Beat did an interesting interview with a sharp young fellow from a radio show the other day — yesterday, in fact — (details to come) and he asked if any comics publishers had a “digital strategy” and we had a hard time thinking of too many names. But Top Cow does seem to be plunging boldly forward on a variety of carriers.

Top Cow Productions, Inc. proudly announced today that the publisher has partnered with comiXology, iVerse Media, WOWIO, Amazon.com and Longbox Digital to distribute their digital comics on mobile, portable and desktop readers.

The move is in direct response to requests from fans and in an effort to tap into a new growth market. The publisher plans to focus on primarily archival material and sold out issues of recent series. The first of Top Cow’s digital comics will be available beginning December 10th, 2009.

Top Cow will release the following titles for the month of December for free: Witchblade #1, Wanted #1, The Darkness/Pitt #1 (already available on Comics by comiXology), Witchblade #80, Tracker First Look, The Darkness Volume 3 #1, Berserker #0, Impaler Volume 2 #1, Hunter-Killer #1 and The Darkness Volume 1 #1. Each week will see new issues available for fans to download.

HeroesCon: Longbox Digital Comics

Rantz Hoseley, the editor behind Image's “Comic Book Tattoo” anthology of comics inspired by Tori Amos, introduced his latest endeavor at Heroes Con this weekend. Longbox, a digital comics platform similar to iTunes, is expected to launch later this year as a free download for Mac, PC, and Linux. Developed by Quicksilver Software, Longbox comics can be download for a suggested price point of $.99 per issue, with the potential for block and subscription pricing. The first two publishers confirmed for Longbox are Top Cow and BOOM! Studios. CBR News caught up with Hoseley to discuss the details of Longbox and its potential impact.

Your iTunes For Comics? Here It Is (Maybe).

While publishers like IDW and Dark Horse have had luck releasing digital versions of their comics for the iPhone recently, many publishers have wondered whether a one-stop digital comic store would ever be created. And then Longbox was announced.

Longbox, which will be made available as a free download later this year by Quicksilver Software, was announced at this weekend's HeroesCon in North Carolina. Described as "a digital comics platform similar to iTunes," the software will offer downloadable digital versions of comics by publishers Boom! Studios and Top Cow for just 99 cents (Discussions are being held with other publishers to add their lines). Rantz Hoseley explains the thinking behind the new app:
