NPR: Begun, The Digital Age of Comics Has

... And the previous age of comics, whatever it was called (the Modern Age? The Bronze Age? Copper? Iron? Molybdenum?) ended with neither a bang nor a whimper, but with publishers, creators, retailers and fans exchanging lots of puzzled expressions and a collective shrug.

Comixology offers its own app, through which comics from indie publishers like Image, Dark Horse and Top Cow can be purchased alongside Marvel, DC and BOOM! titles. There's also a web viewer, for those who don't own any of the compatible mobile devices.

And those who just hate Apple.

Another platform for downloading and reading digital comics, Graphic.ly, features fewer titles, but unlike Comixology allows readers to download them onto their desktop computer (a web viewer is still in the works). Navigation is easy, the colors are crisp, but what the Graphic.ly folks are really playing up is their social networking/community building elements — friend requests, and what have you.

Newsarama: So... Who IS COMIXOLOGY, The Digital Comics Leader?

One year makes all the difference.

When ComiXology launched its "Comics by ComiXology" iPhone app in July 2009, the company appeared to be one in a crowd of developers. After all, there was more than one way to read a comic on Apple products.

But one year later, and ComiXology is all over the news because of its involvement with Marvel and DC. The two leading publishers have chosen ComiXology as a partner in their digital program, and the company is working with more than 30 other publishers, as well as holding exclusives with more than one creator.

So who is ComiXology? Where did they come from? And what are they up to next?

Comic News: Bleeding Cool Looks at Comixology

"Basically, yes, it works and I’m happy to read comics on a computer like this. It feels less finicky than Longbox, there’s no download necessary and the front page isn’t covered by CBR reports."
- Rich Johnston

Multiversity Comics Looks at Top Cow's Move into the Digital World

As we move further and further into the Digital Age, more and more people are wondering what the future holds for comic books. Like any form of print media, it is slowly dipping its toes into the digital format, hesistant to dive in so to not demolish their existing audience of fans who prefer their media to come in a more tangible form. However, with the ascension of ComiXology and the move of big names in the industry like Marvel, Red5, and Image to supporting applications of that sort, the digital wave is coming sooner rather than later.

Given that they've been quick on their feet in recent months, aggressively marketing themselves and very carefully their brand identity, it should be no surprise that Top Cow Productions is now making a move to the digital world. Take a look at their press release after the jump, and ask yourself this - how long do you think DC will hold out as the last big gun to not go digital?

PW's The Beat: Top Cow has digital strategy!

PW's The Beat did an interesting interview with a sharp young fellow from a radio show the other day — yesterday, in fact — (details to come) and he asked if any comics publishers had a “digital strategy” and we had a hard time thinking of too many names. But Top Cow does seem to be plunging boldly forward on a variety of carriers.

Top Cow Productions, Inc. proudly announced today that the publisher has partnered with comiXology, iVerse Media, WOWIO, Amazon.com and Longbox Digital to distribute their digital comics on mobile, portable and desktop readers.

The move is in direct response to requests from fans and in an effort to tap into a new growth market. The publisher plans to focus on primarily archival material and sold out issues of recent series. The first of Top Cow’s digital comics will be available beginning December 10th, 2009.

Top Cow will release the following titles for the month of December for free: Witchblade #1, Wanted #1, The Darkness/Pitt #1 (already available on Comics by comiXology), Witchblade #80, Tracker First Look, The Darkness Volume 3 #1, Berserker #0, Impaler Volume 2 #1, Hunter-Killer #1 and The Darkness Volume 1 #1. Top Cow mentioned in iPhone App Article

I thought that I might be writing about reading comics on Apple’s revolutionary new tablet, a much-rumored expanded version of the iPod, by now, but their September meeting came and went with no news on that front. So I’m still reading on my iPod Touch, which has the virtues of clarity and portability and the vice of tininess.
