Can All These Conventions Co-Exist: Filip Sablik and Ron Marz Sound Off

Do you think the comic book industry can support two conventions on the same weekends, what are your plans for those respective weekends, and why did you choose to participate in whatever manner you chose?


Ron Marz (Witchblade, Angelus): I think when you have regional shows that are far enough apart on the same weekend, it's not a big deal. Emerald City in Seattle and MegaCon in Orlando are the same weekend, but they're literally on opposite ends of the country.

But having two cons in the same city, on the same weekend, like what's happening in New York in October, strikes me as ludicrous. The show at the Javits Center is established, well-funded and a proven success. It's grown each year. It's really second only to San Diego in terms of scope and importance. I have to think that's where most of the comic publishers and creators are going to be, including me. I assume the competing Big Apple show will offer an array of washed-up wrestlers and TV has-beens hawking autographed photos.

Filip Sablik, Top Cow publisher: I think it is possible for the industry to support two conventions on the same weekend, particularly if the conventions are serving very different regions (for example, East Coast show vs. West Coast show). Obviously it puts a strain on publishers to decide which show they are going to support. I'd hazard that most publishers only have one convention booth setup and limited convention staff so supporting two shows in one weekend is not something that's feasible. Top Cow is taking an aggressive convention stance in 2010 after taking a year of in 2009. In some cases we'll be able to support two competing conventions by exhibiting, in other cases we may opt to exhibit at one show and support a second show with a variant cover exclusive, door prizes or some other level of support. It all comes down to where do we as a publisher get the most value and maximize our interaction with existing and potential fans.

Wizard reviews The Darkness #75 in Thursday Morning Quarterback

This issue's central concept is a world overtaken by Darkness with Jackie Estacado as an evil ruler of the world opposed only be a sect of warrior nuns who are attempting to discover if a child is the one to bring back light to the world. This was a pretty cool stanalone issue. As a new reader, I felt like the issue drew me in and managed to tell one cohesive story outside continuity while still looping it back around to the main story by the end of the book.

Wizard reviews Broken Trinity: The Darkness

The future's not looking too bright for Jackie Estacado in Top Cow's Broken Trinity: The Darkness, which hits shelves on Wednesday. Our favorite crime boss is holed up in Central America, his bond with the Darkness weakened and his crime family shattered. Understandably, he's taking a little siesta, while up north his former employees run rampant preying on the innocent. But there's no rest for the wicked, so the Butcher pays Jackie a visit to remind him of his responsibility to his crew and that, because of him, his misguided crew has killed a 7-year-old girl. After a nervous phone call from Finn, who lost his cover in Broken Trinity #1 while tailing Sara, Jackie heads back up to New York to set things right again. READ MORE.

TOP COW ANNOUNCES WIZARD WORLD CHICAGO PANELS AND SCHEDULE

Special Guest Marc Silvestri, Phil Hester, Kenneth Rocafort and Eric Basaldua hit the Windy City

LOS ANGELES, Calif., June 26, 2008 – Top Cow Productions Inc. announced today they are exhibiting at this weekend’s Wizard World Chicago at the Rosemont Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois and will bring some special guests, unveil exclusive variants and make new announcements about upcoming projects.
“Chicago brings out some of the best comics fans in the word and we are excited to be able to present them with the best Top Cow has to offer, especially during opening weekend of the Wanted movie in theaters,” pronounced Mel Caylo, VP-Sales and Marketing, referring to the film based on the Top Cow comic mini-series by Mark Millar and J.G. Jones. “Not only are we bringing CEO and Founder Marc Silvestri to the show, we’ve also invited Puerto-Rico based Madame Mirage artist Kenneth Rocafort, popular Darkness writer Phil Hester and Magdalena/Daredevil artist Eric Basaldua to meet the Midwest fans!”
Top Cow will set up shop at Booth #1204 to give convention-goers the opportunity to meet these creators and more, including Pilot Season: Alibi artist Jeremy Haun, longtime fan-favorite Witchblade artist Mike Choi and Darkness: Butcher writer Rob Levin.
Three exclusive variant issues will be available at the booth, including a special Ryan Sook cover of First Born: Aftermath, a Kenneth Rocafort cover of The Darkness #4, and a Witchblade #118 cover by Marc Silvestri.

The seven men groan playfully amidst the shouts of "one more, one more" from the mass of fans holding up their digital cameras and cell phones. Already, several rounds of camera clicking help illuminate and capture the rare image found within the back corner of Atomic Comics in Mesa, Ariz.
